Poppies For You - another Country Diary card

Hi Everyone,

Up early, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed this morning, so thought I'd get cracking and straight in with another card in what is turning out to be the Country Diary series. Love this paper collection :)

My all time favourite flower is the poppy - especially the simple common corn poppy, which doesn't seem to be as common now as it was in my younger days.  The sight of them always stirs up a bunch of happy memories, the most recent from a holiday, a few years ago now, in North Yorkshire. We were driving from our base in the hills towards Theakston's Legendary Brewery at Masham ... the EM loves that sort of thing ... when we hit roadworks and were diverted from our route. And what a diversion it was too, round hills and dales, but suddenly we found ourselves passing a cornfield which was ablaze with poppies ... absolutely stunning. Serendipity at work again!

No photograph on the computer for Theakston's, I do have some prints somewhere though, just can't lay my hands on them now :(  But here's one of the poppies - there were masses of them - and that's what gave me the idea for the topper on this card. The base is a die-cut circle of red card to which I've glued as many poppies as I could, together with a few punched out leaves. It's hard to see but I've added some Liquid Pearls around the inner rim of the the topper base - these are more visible in reality than in the pic. More lace, more ribbon, a couple of dew drops, a tiny label and a cute little button finish the card off.

Materials used:

  • White square base card
  • Leftover snippets of green and red card
  • Paper and tag, The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady
  • Spellbinders Labels Splendid Circles
  • Punches: X-cut edge punch and Woodware leaf punch
  • Poppies from Wild Orchid Crafts
  • Liquid Pearls - White Opal
  • Cream lace trim and Red ribbon from Ribbon Carousel
  • Other embellishments - green button, gold cord, red dewdrops  - from stash

And as before, it's almost becoming a habit, I'm entering this card for the following challenges:
Paper Crafting Journey #8 - Vintage

and
Joanna Sheen Challenge Blog - Flower Power

It's the start of a new week and new challenge over at Di's playground, so I'll be skipping over there to see the roll call and enter this card too.

Granny Square update: the tot is now 40 so almost half way to the finish :) I have Barbara Gray, The Voice and Al Pacino ... we watched Glengarry Glen Ross yesterday evening - a brilliant and thought-provoking film ... to thank for that :)

The sun is shining and the birds are tweeting away - it looks as though it is going to be another lovely day for us today. I hope that it is for you too, and that you are all enjoying the holiday weekend.

I'm off now to catch more of Barbara Gray's demos ... will sit on my hands because I can't afford any more of her stamps right now ... need to conserve my spending money for our summer holiday ...  but just love the demos.

Happy Crafting,

I love poppies too Elizabeth and this is such a beautiful card. Great use of those papers, sometimes I struggle to use the heavily patterned ones as I don't want to cover them up!

One of my favourite flowers too. This card is gorgeous. Did you make the poppies yourself? We have several fields near to us that have swathes of poppies in them each year. It really looks stunning on a sunny day. Hugs Mrs A.

This is STUNNING Elizabeth! Seems everyone loves poppies, I can't wait for mine to bloom. I love detours or just plain getting lost. Seems I always encounter something lovely along the way.
