Christmas Card Club - Cards 02/2020

Hello Everyone,

It was my turn to choose a theme for today's Christmas Card Club challenge - a difficult task but after much inner debate, not to mention more than a little help from Margaret, I opted for 'holly and/or ivy'.

And because my goal for this week is to concentrate on stash busting all the supplies for today's cards are not new - check out my post for Wednesday to see the boxes I'm working from.  I managed to make four altogether, two with holly and two with ivy.

The bottom panel on this one is a leftover piece from a masterboard I created autumn last year using lots of paint, leaf stamps, ink, stencils and texture past. The matting for the holly sprays and greeting was cut from scraps of glitter card. I had to cheat and use two snippets, butted up together, for the greeting.
The topper for this one is the last scrap from another masterboard, created way back in 2018. The background is made up of sponged inks. It was overstamped with two of my favourite Penny Black stamps , Winter Bough and Winter Berries in shades of green and gold. The die-cut holly spray was made from snippets of green and red cardstock.

The background piece, if I remember correctly, was made using a technique that involved embossing wax paper which was then ironed on to a white card base to create a resist for ink. The backgrounds on the next two cards were created in the same way.

The backgrounds were almost pretty enough to leave as is but, of course, the challenge called for some ivy so I stamped up some narrow scraps of white cardstock with trails of ivy. For the blue one I used a stamp from the Have a Holly Jolly Christmas set - the same one used for the green card above - and Memento Danube Blue ink. And I used my very first stamp - bought in 1995 - for the red one. This time I embossed the ivy trails with gold powder. In truth, there's not a lot of difference between the two stamped images - I just have a special fondness for the old wood-mounted one. The edges of  the panel are embossed in gold too. The ivy trails on both cards are decorated with tiny gems.

That's it from me for today's CCC challenge. This brings my total for this year to five already - not bad!

I'm also submitting one of these cards to Pixie's Snippets Playground - Challenge #369 - I'm not sure which one yet as I've used a bunch of snippets in the making of them.

I hope you will pop over to see what my teammates have created for today's theme. You'll find a list of their names and links on my right sidebar - as always they are so much more creative than I will ever be.

Stenciling a Carved Flower (2)

Hello Everyone,

I'm going through an experimental phase, mainly because I have lots of old, and new, craft items, especially stencils, that really deserve more of my attention. Which is why I decided to try out one of the images on Darkroom Door's 'Carved Flowers' stencil, used once before on this card topper here, on a 12x12 scrap page.
I used a combination of pink, brown and green distress inks to colour the coneflower image using the photos for inspiration.
Because it is such a large stencil it was fairly easy to ink through it, using a combination of an Art Basics' dabbing brush and, what seems quite old fashioned now, Cut-N-Dry Stamp Pad Foam cut to size. I've had a couple of sheets for few years now and there's still plenty to keep me going for a few more yet. I have yet to succumb to the make-up style brushes that are taking the crafting world by storm at the moment.

I'm pleased with the result - it makes a striking page - and I'm feeling quite virtuous after using some forgotten items from my crafty stash.

Christmas Card Club - Card 16/2019 - Non-Traditional Colours

Hello and Happy Sunday to you all,

It's another Christmas Card Club Challenge Sunday and it's the turn of Sylvie to set the theme - and it's non-traditional colours.

I had a some fun thinking up what colour combinations I could use and then messing about with spray inks and embossing powders to make these three cards.

Card 1
 Card 2
Card 3
The starting point for all three cards is the Navy Color Shine, from Heidi Swapp. Using the packaging method, I dabbed the colour randomly over three front of white card bases. Once it was dry I splattered a second colour on each - Teal Color Shine on Card 1, Gold on Card 2 and Mister Huey's Plumb Thumb on Card 3.

Each card was given a topper stamped with a greeting from a very old Docrafts stamp set, Penelope & Percy Christmas Greetings, and embossed with a coordinating powder, Moxy's Opaque Wave, Heat It Up!'s Crimson Red and Gold. I also embossed around the edge of each topper - easily done using a VersaMark pen and a ruler to draw a narrow line around the edge, dipping one side at a time into embossing powder and heat embossing. Tweezers are very useful for this process - prevents fingers being burned!

To finish, I had a good search in my stash and found matching embellishments for each card.

That's it for CCC today but I hope you will pop over to see what my teammates have created for Sylvie's theme today - you'll find a list of their names and links on my right sidebar - as always they are so much more creative than me.

Sunday Snippet - Winter Boughs

Although I've submitted one card to Pixie's Snippets Playground already for this fortnight, and therefore cannot submit another, I decided to share another snippet make today.

The topper is a leftover scrap from some experimenting I did with embossing folders, moldable foam and distress inks a very long time ago - way back in February 2014, you can see the how-to post here. Two years is too long to remember everything I did at the time - heck, at my age I'm happy if I can remember what I did yesterday! - but I'll do my best.

To make this card I did the following:

  • I used one sheet of light aqua cardstock (Papermill Direct) and trimmed it to form a 5" square tent fold card base
  • For the topper I trimmed the leftover scrap of stamped and inked card to a usable size and matted it on to teal card to frame it. I think I may have used a mix of Evergreen Bough and Shaded Lilac distress inks for this piece and the embossing folder used is Sizzix Winter Botanicals.
  • Next, I trimmed more of the teal card and some silver embossed pattern card I found tucked away - I think it's very old Kanban - to fit the front of the card.
  • Finally, aqua dew drops were glued to two corners and I decorated the leaves and flowers on the topper with Stickles Baby Blue - that doesn't show up well in the photo but it is there.

I like that it's a winter theme but not necessarily a Christmas one - it's a card that would suit a winter birthday or it could fit a number of occasions - thanks, sympathy or even just a very nice notecard to send to someone.

I will be submitting this card to the following challenge:

Craftyhazelnut's Patterned Paper January 2018 - A challenge that is always about using Patterned Papers

I have decided that for the foreseeable future, all cards I'll be making and sharing will have a snippet or two, or three or four, in the design somewhere. The reason for this is that, during operation clear up,  I have unearthed a lifetime's worth of leftovers - okay I could be accused of exaggerating just a little - but it's easily ten years worth. It's too difficult to throw them away so I've set myself a target to use up the majority in the next few weeks. Only three made today and given that I'm easily distracted I could be some time!

Hope you have had a wonderful weekend.

Happy Crafting,

Cardmaking - Christmas Wreath

Hello Everyone,

I hope you are having a lovely day. Thursday afternoon is a good one for me because I go along to the craft club. Today I had a great two hours crocheting whilst enjoying, as usual, the very entertaining and interesting craic from all the lovely ladies who attend the club :)

Once I got home I decided to spend a bit of time cardmaking and this is the card I made.
This card was made using one of the templates I picked up at the SECC show on Saturday - you might have spotted it, and the beginnings of the topper, on my desk in yesterday's post. Because it was a quick and easy make I'll not do a step by step of 'how I made it but list instead the supplies used.

  • Cardstock - a scrap of white for topper; a 12x12 sheet of green (maker unknown) cut to form a 6" square base; red (Bazzill Basics Tomato) for matting the topper.
  • Template - Christmas Wreath from Imagination Crafts
  • Inks - Tim Holtz distress inks, Festive Berries, Fired Brick, Crushed Olive, Evergreen Bough, Shabby Shutters
  • Embellishments - Red Berry Nuvo Crystal Drops; Red & Green enamel dots from Studio Calico

I didn't use any dimensional adhesive on this card which means it can be mailed without costing a fortune in postage.

I'd like to submit this card to the following challenges:

CHNC challenge 305: anything goes as long as it's Christmas

CHNC challenge extra for November 2016

Now I'm off to do some couscous to have with the chilli stew I left cooking in the slow cooker - love my slow cooker.
Happy Crafting,

Christmas Card - Santa Claus is Coming to Town

Evening Everyone,

I hope you've all had as good a day as I have. After a couple of hours doing the usual housework, boring!, I spent the afternoon playing with stencils, sprays, glitter paste, inks, etc. Messy but fun. Result is, a desk covered in stuff that will be the basis of a few Christmas cards and I have one completed to share.
It features a splattered background, a few stamped embellishments and a topper that was, I can hardly believe it, stamped some time last year and never used.

Here's how it was made.

  • The topper ... Tim Holtz Santa's Letter stamped using a red distress ink - either Festive Berries or Fired Brick, too long ago for me to remember -  was matted on to black card.
  • More black card was used to create the greeting. Before stamping I rubbed the black cardstock with a SU Embossing Buddy to prevent static. The stamp ... Santa Clause is Coming to Town, from a Simply Cards & Papercraft, Issue 155, set ... was stamped with VersaMark and embossed with Papermania's Seafoam White powder. The greeting was then die-cut with a die from X-Cut's Tags & Bookplates set.
  • To make the background a scrap of white card was sprayed and splattered with Lava Red Cosmic Shimmer Mist. When this was dry the topper was positioned on the upper left side of the backing piece. Gold jewelry cord was laced through the greeting and this was then wrapped around the backing and taped in place, making sure that the greeting was adhered to just cover the lower right of the topper. All was then adhered to a standard 5" square black card base, oriented to create a tent style card.
  • The little gift boxes, stamps are from the same set as the greeting, were stamped on to white card with Memento Tuxedo Black and then fussy cut before sticking to the left corner using dimensional squares.
  • Finally, two gold enamel dots were added to the top right corner.

I should add that there's an awful lot of dimensional sticky tape and squares on this card so it is in the 'to be hand delivered' category!

I'd like to submit this card to the following challenges:

CHNC challenge 305: anything goes as long as it's Christmas

CHNC challenge extra for November 2016

That's me for this evening ... it's almost bedtime already ... but I feel like I'm on a Christmas card making roll so hopefully I'll have a few more to share soon.

Take care and have a fabulous Tuesday.

Merry and Bright

Evening Folks

I hope this finds you well and having fun. I'd like to welcome my newest followers, Jean, Annie, Kathy, and Liz. Thank you for following, it's nice to know you're there :)

I've been playing in the craft room while the EM has been settling into his man cave new shed. It's great, he gets to store all his handyman tools and I get the spare room back :)

Back to crafting ... today I decided to try out the free stamp set and paper pad that came with Issue 127 of Simply Cards & Papercraft, especially as the set included the greeting 'Merry and Bright', perfect for Hazel's CHNC Challenge 191. I also decided to take my inspiration directly from the magazine's designer, Sharon Curtis' fabulous cards.
I've altered the designs here and there but otherwise they are very similar to Sharon's originals.
For the first card I used a square shaped Kraft card base. The patterned paper was trimmed to size, edged with red ink, and matted on brown card. The length of red satin ribbon was positioned across the front and fastened to the back with some glue tape before fixing it all down to the front of the card base. The stamps were inked up with red ink and stamped on to snippets of white card. The Father Christmas was cut out and matted on to two die-cut layers, the plain and the spiro circles, before attaching it to the front of the card. Similarly, the greeting was trimmed to size and matted on to red and brown cardstock. To finish, a bow was made from a double length of the ribbon and fixed to the band of ribbon.
For the second card I've used a white card base to create a tent shape card. The topper is a scrap of a print made using the Creative Palette, inks and bubble wrap, stamped with the greeting in black, trimmed to size and matted on to red card. For the background, patterned paper was trimmed to size and fixed to the card base. The length of striped paper comes from a sheet of cut-apart designs included in the pack. The spray of holly stamp was inked up with markers, stamped three times and then trimmed to create the embellishments on the topper and paper strip. The final embellishments are the three pearls and red liquid pearls on the holly berries - not screamingly obvious in the photos, but it looks nice in real life.
The inside and the back are also decorated with the sprays of holly.

As well as submitting these cards to the CHNC mentioned above I'm also submitting them to the following challenges:
CHNC challenge extra for August 2014 - anything as long as it's Christmas
Stamping for Pleasure's Rudolph Day - August 2014 - anything Christmas themed as long as there's two
Pixie's Snippets Playground - Week 139 - most of the card used for stamping, matting and layering and the piece of inky print used for the topper on Card 2 - all snippets

I know I don't do this often enough but I'd like to thank you for all your lovely comments on my work, I very much appreciate every one.

I hope you are having a great evening and the Friday will be kind to you.

Happy Crafting,
Materials used:

Making Flower Embellishments - A Little How-To Post plus Sunday Snippets

Hello Everyone,

One of the many crafting websites I pop over to regularly is Shimelle Laine's Pretty Paper, True Stories where it's possible to find lots of inspirational posts covering a wide variety of techniques. A recent post by Gretchen McElveen is on making flowers. I couldn't resist trying this out for myself and thought you might like to give it a try too.
Here's the flower and here's how it was made.

Step 1: It's simple enough. Take a couple of the small shaped ink pads, Gretchen used Colorbox Cat's Eye pads, I used Memento Dewdrops pads - the colours are Love Letter and Pear Tart - and some white cardstock. Stamp the ink pads all over the card. It's stating the obvious I know but the red shapes are for the 'petals', and the green for the 'leaves'. I did try a couple of deeper colours, Rhubarb Stalk and Pistachio - you can see one of each in two of the corners - but preferred the lighter colours.

Step 2: Outline each shape using a black fine line pen - the one I have is an Artline 200 Fine 0.4. You don't have to be too exact ... this is just as well because I can hardly draw a straight line to save myself :)

Step 3: Cut the shapes out leaving a narrow margin of white round each shape ... again you don't need to be precise.

Step 4: Pierce each shape at what will be the base of the 'petal'/'leaf' with a pokey tool. Next, arrange five 'petals' to form a flower shape and then place two or three of the 'leaves' behind. Finally, push a brad through the pierced holes and fasten at the back. End result: a fabulous flower embellishment that can be used on any project.

I've used the two flowers I made to decorate two cards but they could just as easily be used to embellish any project that calls for flowers.

The cards were made using white die-cut card bases, plain green or pink cardstock and some leftover scraps of patterned paper, trimmed with a scalloped edge punch. The toppers are die-cut scalloped edge circles (bought from e-bay back in the days before I had a die-cutting machine) stamped with the sentiment and embellished with the flowers and tiny hearts punched from a snippet of card inked with the red ink pad. The final embellishment is the card candy.

Because of those tiny snippets and the leftover scraps of patterned paper I'm submitting both card to:

Pixie's Snippets Playground - Week 139

And that is all for today : ) Rather later than I intended but I've been busy sorting out stuff in the garden. I only meant to be out there for an hour or so but it was such a lovely sunny day that I got quite absorbed and lost track of time.

Hope you had as good a day too.

Happy Crafting.

Flowers Are Poetry - Another Gelli Plate Print Card

Afternoon Everyone,

I hope you are having a wonderful weekend.

I have yet another card I made earlier, this time for the UKPC August Swap, and once again I've used a Gelli plate print as the basis for the design.
I went a bit wild with my choice of paint colours for the print - blues, pinks, yellows, green and white. The flower design on it was created using a selection of stamps from Kanban's Spring Meadow set to remove some of the paint from the plate before lifting the print.

The allium stamp used for the topper came from the same Kanban set. The stamp was inked up using a mix of  Memento markers - Danube Blue, Rosebud, Cantaloupe, and Bamboo Leaves before stamping on a square of white card. Papermania Textured cardstock was used for matting and Anita's gems decorate the alliums.
The hinged greeting is stamped with Hero Art's Flowers Are Poetry and a couple of tiny stamps from the Kanban set - again, I've used Memento Markers to ink up the stamps.

As usual for me, the inside and the back are decorated with the trimmings from the print.

That's it ... another quick post from me today.

I'm absolutely shattered after my day out to the flower show yesterday. I must have covered quite a few miles walking round the stalls and in and out the various marquees - all good fun but, in the end, quite exhausting!

To make up for all that exercise yesterday, I've spent a bit of quiet time, pottering in the garden - until the breeze blew me indoors and into the craft room. I've been making flowers which I'm so pleased with I think I'll write up a wee 'how to' tomorrow. For now, I'm off to have a cuppa and a bit of a break before tackling supper.

Happy crafting,

Blooming Wonderful - A Sunday Snippet Card

Afternoon Everyone

Oh dear, it's raining here ... guess I'll just have to stay in and craft :)

Hope you are all having a wonderful Sunday - whatever the weather!

This card is made using the first of the many prints taken off when trialing the Creative Palette on Wednesday  and as you can see it is very light on ink, a mix of Fire and Limon inks - it was my first trial and I was nervous so was very sparing when applying the inks :) Also because it was my first attempt, I used a snippet of smooth white card to lift the print ... well, it could so easily have been a complete disaster!!!

I used a plastic fork and bubble wrap to add texture before lifting the print.

Making the card up was simple. I began by stamping the flower spray, flourish and sentiment - all from a couple of stamp sets by Dawn Bibby - with Archival black ink. The flowers are coloured using Memento Markers. Then  I used the deep pink marker (Rose Bud) to draw an edge around the print ... a sort of faux matting!  Finally, after adhering the print to the front of a white card base, I added a few pink dewdrops for embellishment. You'll find a list all the materials used at the end of this post.

I swear my cards are getting simpler!

I'm entering this card to the following two challenges:
That's Crafty Stamping Ground Challenge - the challenge for this one is to use stamps on your project.

and, of course, as the title to this post suggests:
Pixie's Snippets Playground - Week 137 - the whole topper is the snippet!

Right! I'm off for a late lunch ... it's Sunday so everything is late today :)

Thanks for taking the time to visit ... I know that when you're busy it's difficult to find the time so even if you are just looking and not commenting it's still very much appreciated.

Happy Crafting,
Materials used: white card base; scrap of white card for the print; Colorbox Crafter's re-inkers in Fire and Limon; brayer; the plastic fork; bubble wrap; Archival black ink pad; Dawn Bibby's Flower & Leaf and Delicate Scroll stamp sets; Memento Markers - Angel Pink, Rose Bud, Dandelion, Cantaloupe, Pear Tart, Bamboo Leaves; pale pink dewdrops for embellishment

Trials with the Creative Palette - follow up to WOYWW 270

Morning Everyone

Blogger took umbrage at something yesterday afternoon and at first just refused to let me leave comments then gave up altogether and just refused! So, in a huff, I went back to my desk and tried out the Creative Palette that was still lying on my desk from this morning. Here's the result of the first trial run.
Some more practice required but you can see from these test pieces that it is possible to get some interesting effects combining inks, I used Colorbox Crafter's re-inkers as recommended by Jane Elizabeth Gill  to begin with ... the two pieces at the front are the result. I only had three colours in the Colorbox so I decided to mix it up a bit with some Distress Inks and you can see that the colours in the prints got a lot stronger. The Distress Inks are a lot thinner than the Colourbox making it easier to spread and easier to make a mess with ... and I did get pretty messy :)

I even found time later yesterday evening to make a card using one of the backgrounds. As best as I can remember the colours used were Limon and Fire (Colourbox) and Mustard Seed, Ripe Persimmon and Salty Ocean (Distress Inks). The texture was created by pulling a comb and 'drawing' curved lines with a pencil eraser before pulling the print from the palette. Using black Archival, I stamped my recently acquired Feathered Bird (Lost Coast Designs) ... it was love at first sight, I just had to have this dishevelled little fellow even though I shouldn't  ... and the greeting (from Stampin' Up's Wetlands set). To finish, the piece is matted on to a snippet of black card and two wee black dewdrops are the only decoration.

So what is the difference between the Gelli plate, which I already have and love, and the Creative Palette: Well, they are both monoprinting plates but where the gelli plate mimics a thick gelatin plate the creative palette is thinner and firmer - made of the same stuff, I think, as some clear stamps. I've not tried paint on the palette because, and this was one of the reasons for my purchase, I found that I could use my ink pads and re-inkers instead. For more information and instruction on what can be done with the palette check out this Stampendous YouTube video, which demonstrates it's potential so much better than I ever can. I've also discovered a great article on Sarah Anderson's blog, The Art of Moodling, which is well worth reading too.

Just from a personal perspective, I love both the Gelli plate and the Creative palette because using them is easier on the old hands. I've tried sponging backgrounds, in the manner of Sheena Douglas and Barbara Gray, but found the process can often lead to very painful cramps in my hands - I have RSI (Repetitive Strain Injury). Using either of these plates takes the pain out of creating my own backgrounds.
After spotting the palette on my desk shot yesterday, I hope you found this post answers any questions that might have occurred to you.

I'm submitting this card to Pixie's Snippets Playground - Week 136 - used a snippet of black card for the matting.

The sun is shining, the washing is hung out, the EM is mowing the lawn, even though he shouldn't be doing that with his hip ... he's now going for blood tests and a scan to see what is at the bottom of it all ... and the cat is demanding my attention, so I'm off. Hope to be back later.

Have a great day.

Happy Crafting,
PS: just in case you wondered, I am in no way connected to the makers of the Creative Palette, nor will I benefit from this post in anyway :)

Just For You - a NBUS project

Morning Everyone,

It's the weekend - yippee!!! The EM and I have decided to give ourselves a break from painting and decorating the hall ... this is turning out to be a mammoth project! So, as long as there are no interruptions I'm planning to get a bit of crafting done :)
In the meantime here's another card made previously which features a little stamp set that I bought many years ago, perhaps around 2006, just about when I started cardmaking. They were going for a song in the reduced bin at my local craft shop. I think. It was so long ago I can't even remember that accurately :(

The problem then was what to do with the stamps ... I hadn't a clue! I knew nothing about colouring back then, indeed all I had was one black ink pad, and I knew even less about card design. So, sadly, they really had never been used - NBUS as Darnell over at DJ Kard Kreations, calls them. It was Darnell who introduced me to NBUS and spurred me on to dig out the neglected, unloved and forgotten crafty goodies lingering in my stash and now, to celebrate reaching 500 followers, she has launched her NBUS challenge ... just the thing to spur me into action :)

The three images were simply stamped on to a leftover scrap of smooth white card, cut to shape with a square die, and painted with distress inks to match the background.
The background was made by swishing white card through distress ink, in shades of pink and red, and then spritzed with water several times to create an interesting texture ... well, I hope it's an interesting texture :) The card is finished off with one of my favourite greeting stamps and a few black sequins sprinkled here and there. As usual now, I'll list the materials used down at the bottom of this post.

If you have a collection of NBUS tucked away in you stash, and what crafter hasn't, now's the time to get them out and, like me, join in with Darnell's challenge - just click the link above or on the NBUS button to find out all about how to enter. She'll be happy to see you there :)

I'm off now to tackle the first project planned for today. Sewing, I think ... it's a wee while since I got the sewing machine out.

Whatever your plans are I hope you are having a great Saturday.

Take care and happy crafting,

Materials used: smooth black cardstock trimmed and folded to create a tent style card; smooth white cardstock for background, Ranger's distress ink colours, Picked Raspberry, Fired Brick, Spun Sugar and Iced Spruce; stamps - the wood-mounted stamps, there's no indication of name or maker on them, and Ladybug Crafts It's Only Words 2 for the greeting; Archival black ink pad; X-cut Square die set;  black sequins for decoration

Otter Anniversary

Hi Everyone

Hope you are enjoying the weekend. It's not looking too good from the craft room, buy that's okay; what better excuse to stay inside and craft than bad weather :)

Today's share is a card I made a wee while back but forgot to post ... this old lady's memory isn't what it used to be :) It was made for our nature loving friends' wedding anniversary.
It was made almost entirely from materials in a Pollyanna Pickering collection ... additions were the green cardstock used for matting and the green suede style paper string, bought from The Works for a song, and the stamped heart-shaped greeting - die cut using Docrafts X-Cut Homespun Hearts.

The nicest thing about using a kit is that it usually includes enough extra images in a variety of sizes to decorate the inside and outside of cards.

Am I the only one who has these kits stashed away, largely unused. Trouble is, I'm taken with the images, buy one, make one or two cards up and then put it away only for it to be forgotten. I keep thinking I should make a bit of an effort to make the rest up and donate them to charity.

I've been making another cushion (pillow) cover today ... a birthday present for young lady's upcoming birthday, which means I won't be able to show you it until after the event ... hopefully I'll remember this time :)

Have a great evening and happy crafting,

Materials used: Base - square white card; Paper, toppers and greeting on inside of card - Pollyanna Pickering collection; Cardstock - American Crafts lime green card, snippet of white card for heart-shaped sentiment; Die - Docraft's X-Cut Homespun Hearts set; Inks - Versafine Olympia Green, Ranger's Crushed Olive distress ink; ProMarker - Marsh Green; Stamps - Anniversary stamp from a free set from Cardmaking & Papercraft, Happy stamp from Wild Rose Studio Everyday Greetings; Embellishments - The Works green paper string, Crystal Stickles, Green crystal sticker gems
