Evening Everyone
It's been a beautiful day here today - warm and sunny with just enough of a breeze to give the washing line a good blow. According to the weather forecast this was going to be the only good day we are going to have this week so I spent most of it in the garden - weeding! Ground elder, couch grass, docken leaf, hairy bittercress, dandelions, mare's tail, creeping buttercup - we have the lot. And that's not counting the hundreds of sycamore seedlings that are popping up all over, even in areas I thought I'd cleared of them!
Once I'd removed the little perishers, I then set about finding a home for some of the plants that have been in pots waiting for me to find them a permanent home. With a little help from my husband,of course, we planted a Cornus Alba 'Siberian Pearls' and transplanted a hydrangea which was struggling under the shadow of a huge Berberis. To make way for the hydrangea, a couple of herbacious plants had to be moved too. Tete-a-Tete daffodils, a blue hyacinth and the Muscari 'White Magic' bulbs that were in pots by the kitchen door have been planted in the long border to make way for pots of herbs.
All in all it's been a long and busy day so it wasn't until late on that I found time to gather something from my garden so that I could join in with Cathy's In A Vase On Monday this week.
I've been leaving these purple tulips for the right time and because the weather is taking such a downturn over the next week that's now ... that they will probably be spoiled by the rain and wind that's forecast anyway. The variety is unknown - they were actually my husband's choice of tulip and he is notorious for not keeping labels.
I've teamed them up with Erythronium 'Pagoda' - a recent addition to the garden. They are in a plastic pot for now but I intend transferring some of the bulbs into a large terracotta pot, and saving a few to pass on to my daughter. The lemon yellow flowers are lovely.
The leaves are interesting too and make great resting places for the somewhat floppy stems of the tulips.
I've also added some Angelica archangelica leaves to the back of the arrangement. I have three Angelica plants, grown from seed, romping away in the long border.
I've used the white Welsh jug, which you may have seen before, for this week's vase. I've placed it on the hall stand which has had a bit of a makeover ... it's now freshly painted a light olive colour. I'm hoping the tulips will last longer in the coolness of the hall than they would in the lounge.
Thanks for visiting ... leave a comment if you have time, I always enjoy reading them and appreciate your interest.
Happy Gardening,
A very nice combination Elizabeth.
ReplyDeleteHello Elisabeth, what gorgeous flowers, the colours together are so beautiful. You sound very green fingered. I love gardens and adore flowers, but my fingers are the kiss of death, I enjoy my neighbours lovely garden though, happy gardening, hugs Kate x
ReplyDeleteGorgeous flowers today love and hugs Carole x
ReplyDeleteLovely erythroniums - perhaps I will have enough sometime to cut some for a vase.... I can see you are going to have to take your husband in hand about labels, Elizabeth, unless you don't mind not knowing what things are either ;)Have you tried bundling your tulips tightly in paper and tying them with string a rubber band and leaving them in water for a few hours? This is meant to help keep them straight. Thanks for sharing today
